Alarm Response and Alpha Codes

Background

Victoria Police's Alarm Response Procedures were designed to reduce the number of attendances by police at unwarranted alarms.  These procedures were developed in partnership with the private security industry.

How do I get an Alpha Code

To get an Alpha Code you apply in writing with a company letterhead to the Licensing Services Division (LSD) outlining the contact person, their contact details and whether you give approval for your company name to be added to the LSD website, in addition provide the following documents:

•copy of Current Grading Certificate

•copy of Current Security Business Licence, or equivalent from another state.

LSD will issue the Alpha Code only when all documents are supplied. A letter is sent to the security company advising them of their alpha code and the time and date the Alpha Code comes into effect. Included with the letter is an information sheet with alarm categories and definitions, a map indicating both state-wide and metropolitan boundaries and telephone numbers of 24-hour police stations for country regions of Victoria.

LSD also notifies police communications of the new Alpha Code and the time and date the Alpha Code comes into effect.

Alpha Codes

In order for Victoria Police to respond to Category A alarms, security companies must contact Victoria Police by ringing 000 (metropolitan/Geelong) and communicate their Alpha Code or police assistance may not be accepted.

An Alpha Code is a three letter code issued to graded alarm companies to allow then to obtain police assistance for Category A alarms.
